BABLAKE WINES LTD
Wines from
almost every corner of the globe find their way to the Coventry, Gloucester and
Bristol warehouses of Bablake Wines, one of the UK’s largest independent drinks’ distributors. Chile, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, South
Africa, Argentina, Bulgaria, Cyprus and the USA are among the newer
wine-producing countries favoured by this long-established drinks wholesaler
and retailer, alongside the more traditional producers such as France and
Italy.
Over 700 of the
wines in Bablake’s portfolio are on permanent display in it’s newly refurbished
cash & carry at the company’s headquarters in Kingfield Road, Coventry,
where local businesses and private customers alike can purchase everything from
a single bottle of table wine to a case of fine Champagne.
The
ever-increasing choice of wines is matched by an equally fast-growing array of
traditional beers, canned and bottled beers, F.A.B.s and soft drinks, not to
mention spirits and liqueurs. Against
this background, Bablake Wines has concentrated its efforts on its strengths -
offering quality products and service, a fast and flexible response to customer
demands, and good value for money to customers large and small.
Bablake Wines’
‘can do’ approach dates back to 1929 when Ronald Vincent Wyles founded the
company by converting one of his father’s butcher’s shops into an
off-licence. After working at
Coventry’s Standard Motor Company during the Second World War, Vincent Wyles
acquired more shops, making a total of seven, but these were eventually sold
off so that the company could further develop its fast-growing wholesaling and
cash & carry business.
Bablake Wines is
truly a family business, with Vincent Wyles’ two sons, younger daughter and
son-in-law, having a combined service to the company of over 130 years. Older son and managing director, Martin, now
heads the family team and the hundred-strong workforce, following his father’s
death in 1997. The Coventry-based
company that started with just one off-licence now boasts three depots and a
fleet of 16 lorries, enabling the company to serve hotels, restaurants, pubs
and clubs throughout a wide geographical area - from Stoke in the north to
Bridgwater and Taunton in the south, and from Wales in the west to Peterborough
in the east.
Bablake’s
distribution team works closely with the Company’s telesales personnel and
fifteen-strong sales force to ensure that every customer is afforded the same
first-class service, a commitment which has earned the company a “nothing is
too much trouble” reputation.
This philosophy
is also shown by Bablake’s commitment to help their customers develop their
businesses in other ways. For instance,
the Company’s professional graphic design team invest a great deal of time and
effort in creating wine lists, menus and own labels, each designed to meet the
customer’s individual requirements.
Bablake Wines’
greatest strength, however, is its ‘brought up in the business’ senior
management team, whose knowledge, understanding and expertise is there to be
drawn on by Bablake staff and customers alike.
