In a few Idle Moments with a friend in a wine bar, David Russell dreamed up the name of his new venture - I M something or other….! However, it took a discussion in an Indian restaurant in 1981 to move things forward. David told the restaurateur that his wine was not very good and the restaurateur said, "OK, if you can do better …". So was born IM Wines (now standing for International Marketing).

David used all his knowledge acquired in the hotel industry to source wines and sell them through his new company. Wife Helen was at the helm, whilst David continued his "day job".

Having recognised a gap in the market for a composite range of products to restaurants, ensured that more and more customers came on board.

The spread included Indian, Chinese, Thai and many other food based outlets.

By 1991 the business had grown to £¾ million and David gave up the day job. Now IM Wines have become a truly composite wholesaler covering all sections of the licensed trade, turning over £4 million. Still experts in ethnic beers, growth now encompasses everything from fine wine to cask ale.
